Yep. It does look like a nightmare!
I am now trying to debug gmtmex with Xcode following this and I cannot even compile the Mex file. The error I get says that the gmt.h file is missing. I’ve tried searching for it, but it doesn’t seem to exist anywhere 
it’s just that I am not ready to give up yet
