**Announcing [PyGMT v0.2.1](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/releases/tag/v0.2.1), a patch release with more [tutorials](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1/tutorials/) and [gallery](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1/gallery/index.html) examples!**

The PyGMT team is delighted to present version [v0.2.1](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1), a release that refreshed quite a bit of our documentation! Cheers to @seisman for spearheading this much needed effort!. Also a big shout out to new contributors [@hemmelig](https://github.com/hemmelig) for creating the fantastic [“Plotting text”](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1/tutorials/text.html) and [“Configurating PyGMT defaults”](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1/tutorials/configuration.html) tutorials, and to [@carocamargo](https://github.com/carocamargo) for the great work on wrapping [`grdfilter`](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1/api/generated/pygmt.grdfilter.html) for “Filtering grids in the space/time domain”. A couple of other highlights include:

- 🐍 Support Python 3.9 ([#689](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/pull/689))
- 📹 Add Liam’s ROSES 2020 PyGMT talk ([#643](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/pull/643))

If you haven’t watched @liamtoney’s video already, here it is:

[![Remote Online Sessions for Emerging Seismologists (ROSES): Unit 8 - PyGMT](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex047/uploads/gmt/original/1X/db46286dd748e5e0f7c44e6f235ce8c6e93e6dea.jpeg)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSIGJEe0BIk)

Note that the video is a few months old already, but you can see what’s new in the [v0.2.1 changelog](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1/changes.html#release-v0-2-1-2020-11-14). Installation instructions can be found at [Installing — PyGMT](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1/install.html), or use it directly online at [try-gmt](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/try-gmt)! @seisman added a new ‘transparency’ alias in [#614](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/pull/614) for making see-through plot items (e.g. legends, points, colorbars, etc), and we’ve also snuck in a new [`plot3d`](https://www.pygmt.org/v0.2.1/api/generated/pygmt.Figure.plot3d.html) function for those of you that want to take things to the next level!

### 🛤 Roadmap to [v0.3.0](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/milestone/3)

These are some [new features in progress](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/pulls) that should make it into PyGMT v0.2.2 or v0.3.0.

- Implement [subplot](https://docs.generic-mapping-tools.org/latest/subplot.html) wrapper ([#412](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/pull/412))
- Add `velo` function ([#525](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/pull/525))
- etc

### ⚠ Deprecation warnings

- PyGMT v0.3.0 will come after GMT 6.2.0 is released, and we will drop support for GMT 6.1.x at the same time to resolve longstanding bugs like incorrect cylindrical projection ‘Q’ grdimage plots with `xarray` [#390](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/issues/390).
  - 💡 Tip: If you want to prepare for GMT 6.2.0 or are feeling adventurous, try installing the GMT 6.2.0 _development_ packages using `conda install -c conda-forge/label/dev gmt` and do report any bugs if you find them!

- We are also thinking of dropping Python 3.6 support in PyGMT v0.3.0 (see issue at [#690](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/issues/690)) in line with the rest of the Scientific Python community (see [NEP29](https://numpy.org/neps/nep-0029-deprecation_policy.html)).
  - ⬆ So make sure you upgrade to Python 3.7 or newer in the next few months!

### 👭 Call for contributors

We’ve recently [refreshed our code of conduct](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/blob/v0.2.1/CODE_OF_CONDUCT.md) and are keen on growing our team to be more diverse 🏳️‍🌈! Thinking of where to start? Go to [Contribute to GenericMappingTools/pygmt · GitHub](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/contribute) or leave us a message here on the forum. There’s also talk about a PyGMT paper happening at [#677](https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/issues/677) so now’s the chance to get your foot in the door!

Enjoy 🥳
