I’m unable to figure out how the attached figure could be built.
Anyone has tried something similar using GMT? Any ideas how to do so?

Assuming you have the data,
The three panels are just grdimage with some -p(perspective) and -X,-Y(shift).
The Antartica map is the same with coast instea… But the cylinder’s projection is more difficult. Maybe with a clever clipping/projection trick … or gdal ?
At any rate, you’re in for a nice round of trials and errors
