The oblique equator in an Oblique Mercator projection is parallel to the x axis. Can this be changed to make the oblique equator parallel to the y axis?

It cannot right now. You are not alone in wishing it be selectable. I suggest you open a github issue feature request on GitHub and explain the desired feature - at least then there will be an issue we can work on and prioritize.

The feature has now been implemented in the repo via a +v modifier to -JO|o. Thanks for nudging this along.
