Use GMT in a smartphone?

Is it possible to install and use GMT in smartphone like on a PC? Or should we develop an app?

I think an alternative would be to use it online (with try-gmt) but this will only work with internet.

Deep underneath the Android and iOS operating systems are Linux and Unix, respectively, but those phone operating systems don’t provide access for running something like a “terminal” with a command line so there is no way to just “install GMT”. You would have to develop an app through the app interfaces they provide.

Some people seem to be able to run Julia on Android, so it should be possible to run GMT.jl

Ok. Thank you. I was asked by a high-school geography teacher that she would like to use it in class but not all her students have pc.

Thanks. Do you have any idea how difficult it would be to make the application?

I have no idea about how hard it is to make an Android or iOS app, but I think it requires quite a lot of work by someone who knows the system.

That procedure seems to be installing a virtual machine on the Android device and then Ubuntu on the VM. I had no idea that was possible, but it seems like a very heavyweight way to run a program.

Perhaps some useful background information at this link (for iOS and a few years old).

The settings via the map location icon only provide options for cities. Choosing “London” for Greenwich in the meantime would be a mistake because the UK observes the summer shift. It is critical to understand that GMT and UTC (Universal Time Coordinated) do not adhere to any kind of Day Light Savings legislation.

Solution: Because Iceland is in the GMT/UTC/Zulu time zone, it has chosen not to observe the summer time change. Iceland’s capital is “Reykjavik,” so choose that city for your Android app.
