And why would it do that, when you have all tiles already. Maybe it’s trying to check for updates, and when no internet connection is found, it prints that?
Maybe you could see what it’s trying to do with tcpdump or wireshark.

But that is the point I’m trying to understand. Downloaded how? Did you use gmtget? (you should). Because if you did download the .jp2 tiles that is unknown territory.

When it will cause troubles, it will be because some internal GMT/GDAL bit will fail, and the diagnose won’t be obvious.
I think we are talking about different things. The space in Program Files sooner or later will cause some trouble but it has nothing to do with the remote files issue. The issue here is that those jp2 files are not to be used directly. What users must to to download a full dataset is to use gmt get and then they can copy the .gmt\server directory into another machine, which will contain only .nc files.
