A stupid question: is there a way to directly calculate the vertical derivative of a grid (not gravity)?

Hi Roi,
No, since if it is not a geopotential there is no way to know how your field varies with z. For geopotential we use Laplaces’s equation to express d/dz via the horizontal derivatives.
If you have two grids at different z then you could do a first difference divided by Delta z.
