Any plans for a PyGMT short course at ~EGU26~ EGU27?

Hi everyone,

Just out of curiosity: are there any plans for a PyGMT short course or workshop at EGU2026?
Here in Brazil, many users have been learning and developing their figures using the materials from past courses, which have been really valuable.

Thanks!
André

Hi @andrebelem, the call for EGU short courses ended on 16 Sep according to https://www.egu26.eu/about/deadlines_and_milestones.html, so probably not (forgot that the deadline for these are super early!). Maybe there’s another conference that’s worth organizing one for? Are there any other local ones you might know of in your region?

Is anyone interested in attending EGU27? There’s a good chance I might be in Europe around April next year so could try and organize something (can’t believe it’s almost five years since EGU22 already).

Deadline for short course proposals are due 23 September 2026, guidelines at EGU27 - Short courses (SC) guidelines. I think we should go for the Lecture style SC (hybrid optional), and am thinking maybe a half day (2x 1h45min timeblocks = 3h30min). If I can get maybe at least 2 others in-person, happy to coordinate an abstract submission.

Hey Wei Ji,

Thanks for bringing this up!

can’t believe it’s almost five years since EGU22 already

A workshop in 2027 would be the chance to show the new alias system and the parameter classes and maybe some newly added highlevel plotting methods to interested users and students.

I remember from the GMT future / Earth Scope meeting on April 16th that there was the idea of trying to get funding for a PyGMT workshop likely at EGU:

Garrett is working on a no-cost extension for the supplemental funding to allow Earthscope Engagement to host a PyGMT workshop.

I do not know how much effort people on the Earth Scope side already put into this. But I think it makes sense to reach out to them and check what their ideas and plans are. Looking at the participation list in the protocols from the Asian time meetings, it looks like you are not included at the moment.

As I already said in the April meeting, I am open supporting such a workshop. I think it should be possible for me to help with the abstract and with preparing and reviewing materials in case the abstract gets accepted, but I cannot say for sure that I can join EGU27 in person.

Hi @weiji14,

I’m very interested in supporting this. I will most likely not be able to attend EGU27 in person, but I’d be very happy to help prepare and review the course materials, similarly to what we did for the previous workshop.

I think it would be a great opportunity to update the material and include some of the newer PyGMT features that @yvonnefroehlich mentioned. I can update/upgrade some of my classes.

So please count me in for the preparation side, even if I may not be able to join in person.

André

Ok, I’ll try and start a draft abstract next week and share out the link. Will reach out to Earthscope too somehow, I’d like to get a batch of PyGMT stickers printed for EGU27, so hopefully that motivates some people to join :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oh yes! I’m also thinking about how we can get stickers for the new PyGMT logo :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:. But I was too busy the last month :slightly_frowning_face: for reaching out to the team how the stickers and coasters for the GMT logo were produced and funded. To have them available for a workshop would be great.

Ok, draft started at EGU27 short course proposal - HackMD. You two should have permissions to edit I think (if anyone else is keen to be a co-covener, let me know and I can grant edit access).

Will need to edit these sections (marked with a TODO):

  • Title suggestion
  • Convener suggestion (add your name here, don’t add email yet)
  • Session description (please don’t use AI so I can tick the box that says no AI was used :slightly_smiling_face:)
  • Session short summary
  • Learning objectives
  • Keyword selection (need 5)

For reference, see the previous EGU22 proposal. Let’s try and get something finished by 20 Sep, so I can submit by the hard deadline on 23 September 2026.

Hi @weiji14

I’ve added a few comments and suggestions to the HackMD proposal, particularly on broadening the scope to include scientific visualization beyond traditional geographic mapping.

I’d also be happy to contribute a hands-on tutorial using PyGMT to visualize hyperspectral imagery and sediment cores. I’m currently working with hyperspectral imaging in my lab, and I think this could be an interesting real-world example of PyGMT’s versatility.

Looking forward to being part of this again!

Ok, thanks everyone for contributing to the draft! I’ll plan to submit tomorrow before the deadline :hugs:

Submitted now!

I also found out there’s another suggested session that mentioned PyGMT → “Deep time in Python: GPlately, pyGMT and G-ADOPT across tectonics, geodynamics, stratigraphy, thermochronology, paleoclimate and paleontology”. Maybe good to consider merging topics (I don’t know who they are), but let’s see.

Wow!! https://github.com/GPlates/gplately — very nice!

It looks very “PyGMT-ish,” and I just checked their pyproject.toml: PyGMT is listed there as well.

There was a talk from the people of the GPlate community / project as part of the AGU24 memorial session for Paul, and I also have some stickers from them. I just looked in my materials from 2024 - this is the abstract of the talk:

Plate Tectonic Reconstructions_ GPlates, GMT, Python, and the Path Ahead.pdf (27.6 KB)

In the second part they mention the aim of moving towards Python, including the interface pyGPlates and package GPlately. There was a LinkedIn accouncement regarding GPlately 2.0 some time ago, which mentions that GPlately has now an early-stage support of PyGMT, xref: GPlately 2.0: New Features and Enhancements | Dietmar Müller posted on the topic | LinkedIn.

EGU27 would be a great chance and motivation to exchange with the team (from Australia) and the users :slightly_smiling_face: !

Great! Thanks for leading this workshop and pushing things forward. Let’s wait for the feedback from the EGU organizers and see what gets accepted. Based on that, we can still decide how to move on and prepare the materials in detail.
